Arrival in Moshi and Briefing
Arrival at Kilimanjaro International Airport. Transfer to your Moshi hotel. Comprehensive pre-climb briefing with your lead guide. Gear check and equipment rental if needed. Early dinner, early sleep.
The journey
The Lemosho Route is the slowest, quietest, and most successful path to the summit. It begins on the remote western side of the mountain, far from the crowds of Marangu and Machame. Two extra days of approach allow exceptional acclimatisation. Summit success exceeds 95 percent. This is our personal favourite and the route we recommend for climbers who have the time to do it properly.
Day by day
Arrival at Kilimanjaro International Airport. Transfer to your Moshi hotel. Comprehensive pre-climb briefing with your lead guide. Gear check and equipment rental if needed. Early dinner, early sleep.
Drive to Londorossi Gate on the remote western flank of the mountain, about 3–4 hours from Moshi. Registration and route briefing. Begin the climb through montane rainforest: dense, ancient, quiet. About 3–4 hours of gentle trekking. Arrive at Mti Mkubwa, Big Tree Camp, in the late afternoon. The forest here is among the most pristine on the mountain.
Out of the rainforest into the heather zone and onto the vast Shira Plateau, an ancient volcanic caldera. About 6–7 hours of climbing. Sweeping views as the landscape opens. Arrive at Shira 1 Camp with first views of Kibo across the plateau.
A shorter, gentler day across the Shira Plateau, about 4–5 hours and designed for acclimatisation. Arrive at Shira 2 Camp with a long afternoon to rest and acclimatise. Optional walk toward the Lava Tower viewpoint in the late afternoon.
The critical acclimatisation day. Climb high to Lava Tower for lunch, then descend to Barranco Camp. About 6–7 hours total. Your body produces the red blood cells needed for the summit. The Barranco Wall looms ahead.
Cross the dramatic Barranco Wall, an exhilarating scramble that is more confidence-building than technical. A shorter day of about 4–5 hours, designed to preserve energy for what is coming.
Steady ascent into the alpine desert. The landscape becomes lunar. Arrive at Barafu Camp by early afternoon. Eat. Sleep early. The summit attempt begins at midnight.
Wake at 11pm. Begin the ascent at midnight by headlamp. The hardest night of your life. Summit at dawn. Uhuru Peak, Roof of Africa. Photographs. Tears. The slow descent back to Barafu for breakfast, then a longer descent to Mweka Camp. Sleep like the dead.
Final descent through the rainforest, about 3–4 hours. Certificates are issued at the gate. Vehicle transfer back to Moshi. A real shower. A celebration dinner. Tomorrow you fly home, changed.
